Cleanings & Exams

Routine cleanings and exams are the foundation of preventive care. These visits help remove buildup you can’t reach at home and allow your dentist to identify issues early.

  • Remove plaque and tartar buildup

  • Catch small issues before they become bigger problems

  • Support fresher breath and a healthier smile

Most patients benefit from a professional cleaning every 6 months. If you’ve had gum disease in the past or show signs of inflammation or bleeding, more frequent visits may be recommended.

If signs of gum disease are present, your visit may involve a different type of cleaning focused on treating infection below the gumline.

Scaling & Root Planing (Treatment for Gum Disease)

When gum infection extends below the gumline, a routine cleaning is often not sufficient. In these cases, scaling and root planing (SRP) may be recommended to remove bacteria and hardened deposits from below the gums and support healing of the surrounding tissue.

Some patients may hear this referred to as a “deep cleaning,” but scaling and root planing is a specific periodontal treatment—not a routine preventive cleaning.

  • Treats infection beneath the gumline

  • Helps reduce bleeding, swelling, and periodontal pocket depth

  • Often completed in sections for comfort

  • Follow-up care is important to maintain results

Laser Gum Therapy

For some patients with gum disease, laser-assisted gum therapy may be an option to support healing with less discomfort than traditional methods.

  • Gentler treatment

  • Faster recovery

  • Helps reduce bleeding and sensitivity

Fluoride & Sealants

Preventive care isn’t just for children—protective treatments can help patients of all ages reduce cavity risk.

  • Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce the risk of decay.

  • Dental sealants protect hard-to-clean grooves in molars and are commonly used for children and teens, and sometimes for adults at higher risk of cavities.

Family & Children's Dentistry

As parents ourselves, we understand the challenges of bringing kids to the dentist. We make visits comfortable, calm, and even fun. Our preventive care for children includes:

  • Regular checkups and cleanings
  • Fluoride and sealants
  • Early detection of bite or spacing issues
  • Education on brushing and flossing

If a specialist is ever needed, we’ll guide you to the right pediatric dentist — but many families find we can handle most children’s routine needs right here.

Frequently Asked Questions: Preventive Care

Do I really need a cleaning every 6 months?

For most people, yes. Plaque and tartar build up in areas brushing and flossing cannot reach. Regular preventive visits help reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease and allow problems to be identified early. Some patients with a history of gum disease may benefit from more frequent maintenance visits.

What’s the difference between a routine cleaning and scaling & root planing?

A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar above the gumline for patients with generally healthy gums.

Scaling and root planing is a periodontal treatment used when infection is present below the gumline. Some patients hear this called a “deep cleaning,” but it is a different procedure with a different clinical purpose.

Can gum disease affect overall health?

Yes. Periodontal disease has been associated with systemic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Managing gum inflammation is part of maintaining overall health.

What if I’m nervous about cleanings or dental visits in general?

If you feel anxious or have had uncomfortable experiences in the past, let us know. We can discuss comfort options before starting care. Feel free to call us to talk through how we can address your concerns: 972-492-0002.
